All of us go through transitions at some point in our lives.
Sometimes the transition is big: graduation, changing jobs, a major loss, moving, retirement. Sometimes the transition is smaller: a friendship that runs its course, a small shift in lifestyle, a gradual change in how we understand ourselves or the world.
No matter the size, transitions are a natural part of life. And when we go through these transition times, we may feel like there are other things in our lives that need to change as well.
Transitions and Change
There are some reasons that we often feel drawn to make changes in how we live during these transition times. Transitions can give us a natural change point– if something is already different, we are more likely to notice other different ways to do things. Transitions also point out what may or may not be working– and we may want to gravitate towards new ways of thinking or being. Transitions help reframe our values and priorities, and we can make changes towards a life more aligned with how we actually want to live.
From a spiritual standpoint, life transition times are often when we look towards God and make changes in our spirituality. We may start attending church (or attending worship more often), or join a spiritual community. We may explore various spiritual practices or ways to pray. We may spend more time with God, listening for guidance.
Transitions and Minimalism
Life transitions can also give us an opportunity to live more simply and intentionally. Chances are good that, if you are in a transition time, you’re also drawn towards focusing more on the aspects of life that matter the most. Follow that urge– it is typically God- directed, as God can use transition times to guide and help us be more of who God wants us to be!
We don’t have to wait for a life transition to change, of course. We can decide to live more intentionally and simply whenever it feels right. And God is with us every step of the way, helping us to take a more minimalist approach to life.
For I, the Lord your God,
Isaiah 41:13
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Do not fear,
I will help you.”
Notice what gives you life, rather than what sucks life from you. Notice what you can deliberately remove to focus more on the life-giving and important aspects of your life. Be present. Love God. Love others. Be who God has created you to be.
What life transitions have you gone through, or are going through right now? How is God inviting you to live more simply because of those transitions?
